Lync 2013 – September 2013 Client Update (take 3!)

After now several false starts, we have a re-re-release of the September Lync 2013 Client update.

This is the update that introduced speck-checking to Lync IMs, reinstated the old “chasing its tail” circular OCS presence icon in the tray, and – my favourite – “paste special”.

In its current incarnation it’s designated 15.0.4535.1510 with a release date of October 8th – although the two download links used for this post only resulted in “.1507” as at this writing (10th Oct).

Known Issues

2883716 Presence status isn’t updated based on Exchange calendar in Lync 2013

Assume that you install the September 2013 update package for Microsoft Lync 2013 that is mentioned in update 2825630. In this situation, your calendar information and OOF information aren’t synchronized between Microsoft Exchange and Lync 2013. For example, when a meeting is scheduled in your Outlook calendar, the following issues may occur:

Lync Warning 30020 – SIP URI Already In Use

I struck an interesting one this afternoon. BIG thanks to my colleague Dan for the incredibly simple fix.

I’ve deployed an on-premises Lync 2013 for customer. Whilst ostensibly a “greenfield” installation, my initial publish of the Topology revealed there was already a Lync SCP in AD. I removed it easily enough with “Remove-CsConfigurationStoreLocation” and continued.

In the process of deploying Lync I also found there was evidence of an old OCS server – complete with users still homed to it. “Get-CsUser -OnOfficeCommunicationServer | Disable-CsUser” put paid to them – or so it seemed at the time.

Roll forward to go-live and we have a few users complaining they can’t login. They’re getting an invalid credentials error, and I’m seeing Warning 30020 in the Event Logs:

Lync Server 2013 CU3 – October 2013

The CU3 update for Lync Server 2013 has landed, and at first glance there’s at least one high-visibility fix. My Front-End adds updates to 9 different components.

What’s Fixed?

There’s not a lot of detail provided – instead the descriptions are almost entirely “The cumulative update improves the reliability, stability, and performance of Lync Server 2013 <component>”.

2882803 Mediation server can’t forward call history headers when a forwarded call number has an extension in a Lync Server 2013 environment
2882800 You can’t dial out or share video in a Lync Web App meeting in a Lync Server 2013 environment

What’s New? Operator Assistance for Dial-In Conferences!

Lync 2013 – September 2013 Client Update (take 2)

This post has been superceded by take 3.

After a false start, the September client update has been re-released. It offers some FANTASTIC improvements, although for some users it remains not without its bugs.

This update for the Lync 2013 client (kb2825630) reintroduces the familiar OCS-style tray icon (taken in the July hotfix), and adds optional spell-checking to your IMs:

Spellcheck-demo Spellcheck-enable

I also LOVE that it’s added “Paste Special”, although it’s (probably more correctly) referred to here as “Paste Unformatted” in the right-click context menu in an IM. Thankfully it also abides by the standard Windows shortcut of Control-Alt-V. (Thanks for pointing this out Tom). This for me is even more useful than spell-checking!

Polycom VVX firmware v5 – now with BToE!

As foreshadowed in yesterday’s post on the BToE plug-in / device driver, the new Polycom v5 firmware has landed.

You can download the new firmware and documentation from HERE, where you’ll find the software downloads as well as release notes and the updated Admin guide.

New: October 21st: Firmware 5.0.1 released.

What’s New?

There are many new and enhanced features (all documented in the release notes file). Here are a few that jumped out at me:

  • Better Together over Ethernet (BToE). “Connect your computer to your phone and use your computer to control calls on your phone and PC Lync client”. [Note that wording very carefully].
  • Now supports Lync Call Park
  • Downloads the Lync Address Book
  • Will use Lync for its software upgrades (look for the separate “.CAB” file download)
  • The enhanced feature keys Blind Transfer and Voice Mail Transfer now work correctly
  • Multiple E.911 improvements, including LIS & normalisation
  • The phone now successfully answers an incoming call when it is transferred through the Exchange Auto Attendant

Polycom BToE v1.0.0

Polycom’s UCS v5.0.0 firmware for the VVX family and the companion PC device driver “Better Together over Ethernet” v1.0.0 have just landed and made quite a splash.

You can download the new firmware and documentation from HERE.

In this post I walk you through the BToE installation. It’s useless on its own, but you have to start somewhere…

A New Call Barges In Over an Existing One

Here’s an interesting KB a colleague stumbled across this week:

kb2868300 You are unexpectedly transferred to a second PSTN call in Lync 2013

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have an Aries or Tanjay telephone that is running Lync Phone Edition.
  • You receive and answer a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) call.
  • You receive a second PSTN call from a caller that has the same caller ID as the first call [or is Private Number].

In this scenario, the first call ends and you are unexpectedly transferred to the second call.

Get-InvalidRgsAgents.ps1

On a recent window-shopping expedition through the event logs on a customer’s Front-End I stumbled across instances of warnings 31137 & 31138. These are generated when Lync realises that users belonging to RGS Agent Groups are no longer EV-enabled, or no longer exist.

During the Active Directory update non-UC enabled agents were found.
The following users are specified as agents, but are not UC enabled…

Warning31138

Annoyingly, the messages don’t identify the Group(s) the offending users belong to. Enter “Get-InvalidRgsAgents.ps1”.

Lync 2013 – August 2013 Client Update

A new update for the Lync 2013 client (kb2817621) takes us from “15.0.4517.1004” to “15.0.4517.1504”.

“This update contains stability and performance improvements. Additionally, this update fixes the following issue:

  • After you wake up the computer from hibernation mode, Lync 2013 becomes very slow and unusable.”

Download

Download it from here:

I exited the client before installing the update, and there was no requirement to reboot the PC.
