SfB 2015 Server Update – March 2016

This update – our first for the year – takes the server from 6.0.9319.102 to 6.0.9319.235. Is this officially CU2? Let’s go with it and see what happens. (Update: Yes, it is “CU2”).

Lync 2013 / SfB 2015 Client Update – March 2016

This March update (Kb3114831) takes the Office 2013-based Lync/SfB client from 15.0.4797.1001 to 15.0.4787.1001.

What’s Fixed

This update fixes the following issues:

  • Kb3144945 Video rendering region is displayed incorrectly in Skype for Business using Citrix RTOP 2.0
  • Kb3144942 “E_UNEXPECTED” error occurs randomly when you join a meeting in Lync 2013 (Skype for Business)

This February update (Kb3114732) takes the Office 2013-based Lync/SfB client from 15.0.4787.1001 to 15.0.4797.1000.

Your fax is probably failing because it’s too LOUD

Getting faxes to work over IP usually takes a disproportionate amount of time and effort in any UC / VoIP deployment. Actually, that applies to any legacy analog data: modems, dial-up EFTPOS, franking machines – they’re all doing the same thing, taking streams of 0s and 1s and turning them into a convoluted sing-song for a companion device at the other end to decode.

Assuming you have the core bits working (codecs in agreement, dial plans & timing), we Aussies have a fantastic test service available to use in Telstra’s “FaxStream”. You simply send a complex test fax to 1300 368 999 & a couple of minutes later it will send you back a report. Note that for this to succeed you need to be sending CallerID from the line, or (and I’ve not actually tested this) have the correct phone number set in your fax machine so FaxStream knows who to call back with the report!

Keep an Eye Out for Electrical Safety

I’ve apparently had a fascination for all things electrical and electronic since an early age. So the story goes, I managed to jam some keys in a power-point aged about 3, apparently blackening all around it but leaving me unharmed. In my teenage years I knew to scream out “I’m OK” if – alright, when – my tinkering resulted in a trip of the house’s solitary circuit breaker and plunged the place into darkness.

Electrical safety is something I think we all too often take for granted, perhaps these days lulled into a false sense of security by earth leakage circuit breakers, aka RCDs and marketed more commonly here in Australia as “safety switches”.

These “Residual Current Detectors” have a tiny differential relay in them and fire – tripping the circuit – if the current that’s going out the Active wire isn’t ALL returning via the Neutral, the logic being that some’s being shunted to ground elsewhere – maybe through you.

One menace these things aren’t going to protect you from is fire, and an electrical circuit can cause one of those when some resistance is encountered where it’s not meant to be – or too much current flows through a cable or joint of a given resistance.

Enabling the Azure Authenticator App for 2FA

I’ve enabled two factor authentication (“2FA”) where-ever I have the option, but long disliked the slow login process waiting for a one-time PIN to wind its way from Azure through EOP and to my on-prem Exchange. I have a convoluted collection of accounts & services through Microsoft so I need to use in-Private browsing to successfully sign in – and hence there’s no point clicking “I sign in frequently on this device, don’t ask me for a code”.

I tonight stumbled across the relatively new “Azure Authenticator” app for my iPhone & decided it was for me.

Unfortunately all of the how-to’s on the web referenced the old Azure portal and a setup process that’s no longer relevant.

I eventually found how to enable the Authenticator & re-traced my steps to capture it. I hope this helps you.

Sonus Updates Tenor Config Manager

As outlined in my previous post, the old “Quintum” Config Manager app has just scored an update to match some of the new/changed values in the firmware.

It’s significant if you’ve been around the traps for a while because Sonus has used this as an opportunity to finally replace the old NET and Quintum branding.

What’s Changed?

What, other than the branding and colours you mean?

  • It installs by default to a new path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sonus Networks\Tenor Configuration Manager
  • Some new prompts (as outlined in the readme for P108-09-32).

Sonus Tenor Firmware P108-09-32 – January 2016

The old Tenor doesn’t see a lot of attention these days, but they’re still out there providing reliable analog and BRI port interfaces across the planet.

We’ve recently seen an update to the Tenor firmware to P108-09-32, up from this time 2 years ago when we saw P108-09-26.

The ReleaseNotes readme is no longer in the download bundle having moved to the Sonus support website (and to which you may not have access)*:
