There’s an old joke that goes “Q: Why do people take an instant dislike to <InsertNameOfUnpopularPolitician>?” “A: It saves time”. And so it is with SEFAUtil.

Without doubt SEFAUtil is an indispensable utility. “Secondary Extension Feature Activation Utility” – to give it its full name – ships in the Lync and Skype for Business “Resource Kit” (“ResKit”) download pack. When correctly integrated into the topology it gives support staff the ability to query, set and cancel all manner of call-forwarding and team/delegation settings from the comfort of their cube, without needing to visit the user or reset their AD password in order to do it remotely (after signing in as that user). It’s a godsend when someone goes on leave unexpectedly or has a catastrophic PC failure with an urgent incoming call pending, and as equally helpful when configuring the settings for executives and other ‘sensitive’ users.

VVX – Missing files, config reverted

This error pops up from time to time with the Polycom UCS family of devices (VVX, Trio & SoundPoint) and it’s usually easily resolved.

MissingFilesConfigReverted-Error

Whilst the phone won’t tell you what the problem is – it doesn’t name the file(s) it can’t find – your provisioning server is likely to hold the answer.

In this example, the error is here in plain (hind)sight:

MasterConfigFile-WithError

Can you see it? Here’s how to find it.

AudioCodes Plugs AD Password Leak in Mediant SBCs

The release of AudioCodes SBC firmware 7.20A.100 fixes an issue where the Active Directory passwords of your SBC administrators might be inadvertently captured into the Syslog.

This issue is isolated to the AD / LDAP Authentication feature, where the SBC will let you authenticate to its web console using your Active Directory credentials. It passes those to AD and queries your group membership. If you’re in the right AD group, you’re allowed the appropriate level of access to the SBC.

The leak only occurs if you have LDAPDEBUGMODE set to 3 (the highest level) in the SBC’s AdminPage.

Here’s a capture of the syslog from an affected device, logging Gilligan’s AD password:

PDP (CAC) Errors After Installing SfB 2015 CU4

I noted in my recent post about CU4 that I’d seen a recurrent 32270 error in my Lab after the install, and that it took another reboot to banish.

Roll forward a few weeks to my current customer deployment and I’ve been seeing recurrent PDP (Call Admission Control) errors… since the moment CU4 went on.

These are popping out roughly every 5 minutes:

Event36023-DisconnectedFromServer

Event 36023, LS Bandwidth Policy Service (Core)

Disconnected from server.

Machine FQDN server1.contoso.com (IP address: 10.10.10.10, TCP listening port: 448, Type: Intracluster) in pool myfepool.contoso.com
Cause: If the specified server is removed from the topology or is currently draining or is stopped, this behavior is expected; otherwise, a network issue may have caused the disconnect.
Resolution:
If this behavior is unexpected, resolve the network issues between the two servers. Ensure that the service is listening on the specified port and FQDN.
